Who Are RDO?

RDO, based in Reigate, Surrey, and founded in 1952 by the current family owners, specialises in the supply, both online and in-store, of premium range domestic appliances and the design and installation of beautiful bespoke kitchens. We serve both retail and trade customers alike and have established ourselves as one of the largest, most respected and trusted independent retailers of kitchens and appliances in the UK.

The History of RDO

In 1941, Ken Sargant, the founder of RDO, left school at the age of 15 and found work in a drawing office at the London docks. His team were told they were to design concrete barges for the transportation of wheat, but it later emerged that the barges were actually constructed for the Mulberry floating harbour – assembled as part of the follow-up to the Normandy landings during World War II. At 17, Ken volunteered to join the RAF, but was later demobilised because, being a draftsman, his skills were needed to help with the post-war rebuilding of London.

After the war, Ken worked in London and attended night school for 7 years to become a certified architect. In the early 50s, as a freelance architect, he was hired to attain planning permission for a property in Reigate. Ken struck a deal with the owner, offering to purchase the property if he was able to attain planning permission. Upon successfully attaining planning permission, the agreement for Ken to purchase the property fell through.

A few weeks later, Ken met his future wife, Patricia, at a local beauty contest. The next day, they went on their first date and attended a garden party. At the party, Ken spotted the owner of the property he’d tried to buy and explained to Patricia what had happened a few weeks prior. Patricia, a beautiful and charming woman, went over to the man and, within 5 minutes, convinced him to sell Ken the property in Reigate. The sale was completed the next morning and Reigate Drawing Office (later abbreviated to RDO) was born.

RDO started out printing architectural plans and selling office supplies locally. At that time, Ken had the only plan printing machine in the area and he quickly realised the business potential! In 1961, Ken wanted a washing machine, but didn’t want to pay full retail price, so, he opened an account with AEG to take advantage of the trade discounts on offer. Patricia loved the appliance so much that she convinced Ken to buy one and put it up for sale in the shop window. Ken freely admits he thought it was a silly idea at the time, but decided to give it a go anyway. The AEG washing machine was sold the same day it was put on display and, after this happened a few times, Ken realised there was a market for discounted kitchen appliances.

Michael Jenns, who worked with RDO for 46 years, started in 1963 and despite being a talented draftsman, wanted to focus on selling kitchen appliances. Michael would order appliances by the dozen and, because there was no space in the shop, would store them in a selection of local lockup garages owned by Ken. For many years, Michael was the only appliance salesman at RDO and he became very well-known and respected in the appliance industry.

In 1977, Ken’s son, Roger joined RDO straight from School. After a short stint of honing his merchandising skills in the automotive industry during 1984, he returned to RDO to take the business on and to better things. Roger and Michael worked well together and recognised the changing retail landscape, so they began opening accounts with more manufacturers, focussing on buying appliances in bulk so they could offer larger discounts to their customers, mostly in the Exchange & Mart, which was frowned upon by the industry at the time. At this time, RDO didn’t have a proper warehouse, so they continued to store appliances in a small additional warehouse at the rear of the shop, and in the family owned lock ups. By the early 2000s, the situation with storage became untenable, so Roger managed to scrape together enough money to purchase a warehouse, a move which allowed RDO to grow rapidly. During 2009, Roger managed to purchase a much larger warehouse, which we still operate out of today.

In 2014, Roger decided to diversify the RDO brand by entering the luxury kitchen design market, which offered a natural synergy with the core domestic appliance business at RDO. This move led to yet another re-brand and the total renovation of the Reigate showroom, which, of course, was designed by Ken Sargant at 88 years young! The company has since gone from strength to strength, offering its services nationally and winning a number of prestigious awards including “National Large Retailer of the year” and “ERT Showroom of the year”.

Today, Roger, his wife Jackie and son Chris run RDO, supported by an immensely talented workforce. Ken, the founder, still pops in from time to time and, even at the young age of 94, enjoys having his say about the business along with designing and building various projects with the family.
