The Turbidity Sensor in a washing machine is used to measure the cleanliness of water. It does this by looking for minute particles such as dirt, oils, proteins or bacteria that may be present in the water flow by shining a beam of light through it. This is used to ensure your wash is clean with only clean water passing through it. A Turbidity Sensor is considered a good measure of water quality.
